Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) – First Aid Units and Short Courses
Policy
Purpose
To outline Premium Health’s approach to Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) in compliance with Standard 1.6, while recognising industry expectations for regular recertification in first aid units.
Scope
Applies to all students enrolling in first aid units and short courses delivered by Premium Health.
Policy Statement
Premium Health delivers stand‑alone first aid units and short courses that are subject to regular recertification requirements (for example, CPR every 12 months).
As a general rule, students seeking to renew or maintain currency in first aid units are required to complete the unit/s again in full, as RPL is not suitable for certification renewal purposes.
The only exception is limited partial RPL for the CPR component of a first aid unit, where a student has completed a current CPR unit (e.g. HLTAID009) with Premium Health within the previous four (4) weeks, and is enrolling into another first aid unit that includes CPR as a component (e.g. HLTAID011).
In these circumstances:
- CPR competence may be recognised to avoid unnecessary repetition of the CPR assessment, and
- The student must still complete all remaining training and assessment requirements of the unit to be issued a Statement of Attainment.
Premium Health does not grant full RPL for first aid units where certification currency is required for workplace, industry, or regulatory compliance.
RPL Procedure – First Aid Units
Enrolment Screening
- Students seeking recertification are enrolled to complete the unit again.
- Where a student has recently completed CPR with Premium Health (within four weeks), eligibility for partial RPL of the CPR component is identified during enrolment.
RPL Applications
- Full RPL is not offered for first aid units used for recertification purposes.
- Partial RPL for CPR may be applied only where:
- The CPR Statement of Attainment was issued by Premium Health, and
- The CPR was completed within four (4) weeks prior to commencement of the new unit.
- In all cases, students must complete the remaining assessment requirements of the unit to achieve certification.
Student Information
- Information about recertification requirements and the limited availability of RPL for first aid units and short courses is made available on Premium Health’s website and provided to students prior to enrolment.
