HLTAID014 Provide advanced first aid (previously HLTAID006)

This course develops the skills and knowledge required to provide an advanced first aid response including the management of the incident scene, available resources and other first aiders until the arrival of medical or other assistance. Students undertaking this program will be required to recognise and manage a number of emergency situations and deploy appropriate resources to manage and stabilise both medical and trauma casualties and coordinate safe evacuation where required utilising available equipment.

Your trainer will be a nurse or a paramedic - there can be no better trainer than one who has "lived" the experience. As a trusted health professional, they will teach the 'why' of first aid and are committed to you leaving your course with confidence and competence.
Some topics covered in the advanced first aid course are:

• Responsibility of the first aider


• Critical incident management


• Triage for a multiple casualty incident including planning, resource allocation and casualty extrication and evacuation


• Use of equipment such as spinal board, back boards and stretchers


• Life threatening bleeding intervention including tourniquets and haemostatic dressings


• Effective communication with a first aid team including direction and coordination of other first aiders


• Legal and other requirements


• Basic life support (DRSABCD)


• Cardiopulmonary resuscitation


• Defibrillation


• First aid conditions and illnesses

People over the age of 14 years are eligible to attend. Students attending the course are required to demonstrate their physical ability to perform at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on an adult manikin placed on the floor.
