Epilepsy and Seizure Support Training and Emergency Medication Administration

1 in 5 people with an intellectual disability are likely to have epilepsy. This microcredential is a must for support workers who provide high intensity support for people living with epilepsy.

The complex care training develops the essential knowledge and skills to understand and recognise epilepsy, trigger factors and the different types of seizures. The management of different seizures is thoroughly explained, including seizure first aid, monitoring, emergency response and post-seizure care.

The trainer will examine and discuss different types of medications used to treat epilepsy, as well as strategies for minimising the risks for participants with epilepsy during everyday activities. This includes recognising seizure activity and following the participant's individual Epilepsy Management Plan.

This course includes the safe principles and techniques of emergency midazolam administration via the buccal and intranasal routes, in accordance with a sample Epilepsy Management Plan and Emergency Medication Management Plan. Participants will also learn the importance of monitoring, documenting and reporting seizure activity and medication administration.

The training is competency based. To receive a Statement of Competence, participants must satisfactorily undertake an assessment of knowledge and practical skills.

This course is aligned with the NDIS High Intensity Support Skills Descriptor (Version 3, Nov 22) for Epilepsy and Seizure Support.

Identify common epilepsy seizure triggers and strategies to minimise seizure risks
Identify different types of seizures and describe their appropriate management
Outline safe work practices to reduce the likelihood of injury during a seizure

Recognise and respond to seizure activity, including monitoring and emergency escalation procedures
Demonstrate management of an unconscious participant on the floor and in a seated position
Outline appropriate post-seizure monitoring, documentation and reporting requirements
Demonstrate in a simulated environment the correct technique of intranasal midazolam administration via the drip method
Demonstrate in a simulated environment the correct technique of buccal midazolam administration via the ampoule method
