Overview/Content
1 in 5 people with an intellectual disability are likely to have epilepsy. This microcredential is a must for support workers who provide high intensity daily personal activity support for people living with epilepsy. The training develops the essential knowledge and skills to understand and recognise epilepsy, trigger factors and the different types of seizures. The management of different seizures is thoroughly explained.

The trainer will examine and discuss different types of medications used to treat epilepsy, as well as strategies for minimising the risks for participants with epilepsy during everyday activities. This course includes the safe principles and techniques of emergency medication administration in accordance with a sample epilepsy management plan and emergency medication plan.

The training is competency based. To receive a Statement of Competence, participants must satisfactorily undertake an assessment of knowledge and skills. This course is consistent with the NDIS High Intensity Support Skills Descriptor for Epilepsy and Seizure Support.

Learning Objectives

    All Delivery Modes:
  • Identify general epilepsy seizure triggers

  • Outline several safe work practices to be used to reduce the likelihood of injury during a seizure

  • Describe the management of partial and generalised seizures

  • Follow a support plan for epilepsy and seizure management




    Delivery Options 2 and 3 Only:
  • Demonstrate management of unconscious participant on the floor and in a seated position

  • Demonstrate in a simulated environment the correct technique of intranasal midazolam administration via the drip method

  • Demonstrate in a simulated environment the correct technique of buccal midazolam administration via the ampule method
