Complex Bowel Care Training – Enema and Suppository Administration

Overview/Content
This microcredential provides support workers with essential knowledge and skills to assist participants with their High Intensity Support Daily Activity (HIDPA) relating to complex bowel care. Support workers learn how to assist participants with their bowel elimination needs and safely administer suppositories or enemas to assist evacuation where necessary. The complex care training explores different oral laxatives and how they work within the gastrointestinal system. The program emphasises the importance of a support worker understanding and following correct procedures detailed in a participant's support plan for complex bowel care. The training is competency based. To receive a Statement of Competence, participants must satisfactorily complete an assessment of knowledge and skills. This course is consistent with the NDIS High Intensity Support Skills Descriptor for Complex Bowel Care.

Learning Objectives
  • All Delivery Modes:
  • Identify the major causes, signs and symptoms of constipation
  • Describe strategies to maintain regular bowel function
  • Follow a support plan for complex bowel care
  • Delivery Options 2 and 3 Only:
  • Demonstrate in a simulated environment the correct insertion technique of suppository and Microlax enema


Delivery Mode

  • Option 1: 2 hours and 30 minutes live online training and knowledge assessment

  • Option 2: 3 hours live online training with knowledge and practical skills assessment
  • Option 3: 2 hours and 45 minutes face-to-face training with knowledge and practical skills assessment
