Microcredential: Dysphagia Support Training

As part of Premium Health's Dysphagia Support Training Microcredential, students are required to demonstrate specified knowledge and skills throughout the training and assessment session in order to be deemed competent.

The following applies for training completed from the 1st February 2026.

The person named on the certificate has demonstrated the following knowledge and skills (in a simulated environment): 

Prepare to demonstrate management of a full and partial airway blockage:

  • Recognise the role and responsibility of the support worker and provide support according to first aid training
  • Communicate clearly with participant using specified preference

Demonstrate management of a full and partial airway blockage:

  • Perform correct back blows and chest thrusts for partial airway blockage
  • Recognise and respond if airway is not clear and if person becomes unconscious, commence CPR on the floor
  • Immediately send for help

Complete the management of a full and partial airway blockage:

  • Identify reporting and recording requirements
  • Monitor support to ensure the required outcome is achieved

Prepare to demonstrate the correct technique for testing food and fluid texture levels:

  • Recognise the role and responsibility of the support worker and provide support according to the mealtime management plan
  • Apply infection control principles
  • Communicate clearly with participant using specified preference
  • Prepare the participant for correct technique of food and fluid textures

Demonstrate correct technique for testing food and fluid texture levels:

  • Perform the correct technique for testing food and fluid using the IDDSI framework
  • Maintain a safe and healthy environment throughout support delivery
  • Recognise and respond to situations requiring intervention

Complete testing of food and fluid texture levels:

  • Identify reporting and recording requirements
  • Monitor support

Demonstrate supportive and behavioural practices with participant:

  • Check with the participant on their expectations and preferences for meal-time support (e.g. offering choices, allowing self-feed) using participant preferred communication strategies
  • Demonstrate awareness of the participant’s right to be involved in their support
  • Check for any adjustments needed
  • Checked with participant for preferences before offering food
  • Recognised, responded and adjusted based on participant’s feedback
