Overview/Content
1 in 5 people with an intellectual disability are likely to have epilepsy. This training is a must for support workers who support people living with epilepsy. The training develops the essential knowledge and skills to understand and recognise epilepsy, trigger factors and the different types of seizures. The management of different seizures is thoroughly explained. The trainer will examine and discuss different types of medications used to treat epilepsy, as well as strategies for minimising the risks for participants with epilepsy during everyday activities.

More About This Course
Our Epilepsy program will only ever be conducted by an experienced nurse or paramedic. There can be no better trainer than one who has "lived" the experience of supporting people who have epilepsy. As a trusted health professional, they will teach the 'why' of your course and are committed to your learning.

Some of the topics include:

  • Understanding and defining epilepsy

  • Potential impact of epilepsy and seizures

  • Common types, symptoms, and patterns of seizures

  • Common triggers or conditions that can increase risk of seizure

  • Common medication used to manage seizures

  • Features of a safe environment for working and delivering epilepsy and/or seizure related supports

  • Reporting responsibilities, including handover, recording observations and incident reporting

  • Managing the unconscious breathing casualty
