Microcredential: Urinary Catheter Support Training (IDC and SPC)
As part of Premium Health's Urinary Catheter Support Training (IDC and SPC) Microcredential, students are required to demonstrate specified knowledge and skills throughout the training and assessment session in order to be deemed competent.
The following applies for training completed from the 17th June 2026.
The person named on the certificate has demonstrated the following knowledge and skills (in a simulated environment):

| Participant-Centred Support | Follow the participant’s Urinary Catheter Support Plan and preferences; uphold privacy, dignity, and comfort while managing catheter equipment. |
| Communication and Consent | Explain the support being provided in clear, respectful language; check understanding and gain consent before touching catheter equipment or related areas of the body. |
| Safe Practice and Infection Control | Perform correct hand hygiene; maintain a clean environment; use gloves and PPE correctly; avoid touching sterile connection points; position drainage bags below bladder level to ensure safe flow. |
| Monitoring and Documentation | Record urine output and observations clearly; recognise and document changes in urine colour, clarity, or volume; monitor catheter securement and skin condition. |
| Escalation and Incident Response | Identify and respond to blockages, catheter dislodgement, signs of infection, or failure to drain; escalate immediately to a supervisor or health practitioner according to organisational policy. |
The following applies for training completed from the 1st January 2024.
The person named on the certificate has demonstrated the following knowledge and skills (in a simulated environment):
Prepare to empty and change a urine catheter drainage bag:
- Recognise the role and responsibility of the support worker and provide support according to the support plan
- Apply infection control principles
- Communicate clearly with participant using specified preference
- Prepare the participant for emptying and changing of their urine drainage bag
Demonstrate the correct technique for emptying and changing a urine drainage bag:
- Perform correct technique for emptying and draining the urine drainage bag
- Maintain a safe and healthy environment throughout support delivery
- Support participant dignity and privacy whilst meeting care needs
Complete the emptying and changing of a urine drainage bag:
- Identify reporting and recording requirements
