New heart maps reveal heart attack hot spots in Victoria
Victoria’s top five heart attack hot spots have been revealed in Heart Foundation (Victoria’s) newest tool in the fight against heart attack.
The Victorian Heart Maps, released 1 May, uses the last five years of State Government health data to show how many men and women were hospitalised due to heart attack across Victoria by Local Government Area (LGA).
The data shows 36 out of 48 rural and regional LGAs are above the expected Victorian average for hospitalisation rates due to severe heart attack. It also reveals 8 of the 31 metropolitan LGAs are above the Victorian average. The 8 LGAs include Melbourne’s poorer suburbs of Hume, Brimbank, Melton, Wyndham, Cardinia, Knox, Casey and Greater Dandenong.
Further analysis shows the Victorian (adjusted) average of 11 people per 10,000 having heart attacks over the past five years.
