Perform Venepuncture and Routine Blood Collection

This workshop is designed as ongoing professional development for individuals such as nurses, science and health professionals. Students will practice routine blood collection (excluding complex blood collection techniques) such as venepuncture using vacutainer, butterfly needle, and needle and syringe methods of blood collection on a simulation training arm. This workshop does not certify you to work as a pathology collector. Students seeking this outcome should undertake a Certificate III in Pathology Collection.

Premium Health's venepuncture is only ever conducted by an experienced health professional. There can be no better trainer than one who has "lived" the experience. As a trusted health professional, they will teach the 'why' of your course and are committed to your learning. Some of the topics include:

• Vascular system anatomy and physiology
• Equipment used for venepuncture - vacutainer, butterfly and needle and syringe
• Identifying and selection of venepuncture site
• Preparation for venepuncture
• Venepuncture procedure
• Potential complications
• Collection tubes and the correct order of blood draw
• Relevant first aid management
• Infection control

This workshop is open to everyone; you do not need to be a Registered Nurse or have previous training in routine blood collection. However, this workshop does not qualify you as a pathology collector and we are unable to provide advice on whether this training meets your specific outcome requirements. If unsure, we recommend that you consult directly with your employer.
