Overview/Content
This program provides the essential knowledge and skills required to manage and/or remove excess secretions in a client's oral cavity through the use of positioning and/or shallow suctioning. Participants will practice and demonstrate the use of suction devices and discuss potential complications.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the structure and function of the respiratory system

  • Describe the infection control procedures for the use of shallow suction devices

  • Describe your scope of practice for the use of suction devices

  • Demonstrate various strategies to manage excess secretions and foreign material in the upper airway

  • Demonstrate the principles of safe suction techniques of the oral cavity

  • Describe common problems and complications relating to the use shallow suctioning devices
