People with dysphagia experience difficulty swallowing and have special care needs. This program is designed for support workers to develop the knowledge to assist clients with their special needs when living with dysphagia. This knowledge includes assisting with the safe ingesting of food, beverages and medicines and understanding the use of a texture-modified diet and consistency modified fluids. The program will also discuss recognising and taking appropriate action for a client who is choking.

More About This Course
Our Dysphagia program will only ever be conducted by an experienced nurse. There can be no better trainer than one who has "lived" experience of supporting people who have swallowing difficulties. As a trusted health professional, they will teach the 'why' of your course and are committed to your learning.
Some of the topics include:

  • Understanding the basic anatomy and physiology of the airway and upper gastrointestinal system

  • Outlining the bio-mechanics of health swallowing, understanding the method, process and structure
  • Discussing signs and symptoms of dysphagia
  • Identifying the causes and conditions related to dysphagia
  • Assessing common complications of dysphagia and when to refer for clinical assessment
  • Recognising and taking appropriate action for choking
  • Examining treatment and lifestyle modifications to reduce risk of complications
  • Understanding the principles of a texture-modified and altered fluid-consistency diet
  • Following a generic health care plan
