Personal care

Direct support workers may be required to assist clients with a range of activities of daily living.

This workshop develops the skills and knowledge to assist a client with personal care needs in conjunction with a personal care plan. The role of the support worker will be discussed as well as the identification and explanation of basic principles of care and assessment of select personal care skills.

Some of the topics include:

• Identify and describe activities of daily living

• Describe what a personal care plan is and identify why they need to be reviewed and possibly changed

• Demonstrate how to assist a client with eating a meal

• Identify equipment that may provide assistance and promote independence for a client

• Recognise appropriate personal care for the client

• Define the main barriers in identifying the needs of the client

• Identify the role of the support worker in providing personal care

• Identify and explain basic principles of personal care and demonstrate select personal care skills

• Describe how to respect a person’s privacy while providing personal care

What is a USI?

The Unique Student Identifier or USI is a reference number made up of 10 numbers and letters that:

  • creates a secure online record of your recognised training and qualifications gained in Australia, even from different training organisations
  • will give you access to your training records and transcripts (available in mid 2016)
  • can be accessed online, anytime and anywhere
Do I need a USI?

The Student Identifiers Act in 2014 requires that all students enrolled in nationally recognised training provide their Registered Training Organisation (RTO) with their USI. This is applicable to all HLT and VIC units.

How long is my course valid?

Provide First Aid, Asthma and Anaphylaxis are valid for 3 years. It is recommended by the ARC that Provide CPR is updated annually
