This 4-hour face-to-face refresher course allows Accredited Mental Health First Aiders to update their knowledge and skills and extend their accreditation for a further 3-years.

Designed specifically for participants who have successfully completed the standard 2-day Mental Health First Aid course, the refresher includes new material, visual learning aids and an updated manual for each participant.

Participants will:

  • Gain an understanding of the latest research in the mental health field
  • Learn the 3 key actions for helping someone feeling suicidal
  • Work through complex mental health first aid interactions
  • Practice their mental health first aid skills


  • To enrol in this course, all participants are required to have completed the standard 2-day Mental Health First Aid course on or after 1st July 2015
  • To attend this course, participants MUST bring their original MHFA certificate or evidence of previous attendance to their instructor on the day of training

Additional information

  • MHFA accreditation is valid for 3 years after the date of initial accreditation as stated on the MHFA certificate of accreditation
  • Participants have from 6 months before their accreditation expiry to 3 months after to complete the Refresher Course and online assessment. Their renewed accreditation will be valid for 3 years from the date they passed their refresher online assessment
  • The Refresher Courses were released in early 2018. Anyone who has completed a  Standard 2-day MHFA course in the last 3 years is eligible to attend. Please note: Your accreditation will only be extended if you have previously undertaken a MHFA course on or after July 1st, 2015, not before that date
  • Accredited Mental Health First Aiders should have received a reminder email from MHFA Australia six and three months before their accreditation expiry date.

What is a USI?

The Unique Student Identifier or USI is a reference number made up of 10 numbers and letters that:

  • creates a secure online record of your recognised training and qualifications gained in Australia, even from different training organisations
  • will give you access to your training records and transcripts (available in mid 2016)
  • can be accessed online, anytime and anywhere
How long is my course valid?

Provide First Aid, Asthma and Anaphylaxis are valid for 3 years. It is recommended by the ARC that Provide CPR is updated annually

Do I need a USI?

The Student Identifiers Act in 2014 requires that all students enrolled in nationally recognised training provide their Registered Training Organisation (RTO) with their USI. This is applicable to all HLT and VIC units.
